The off-season dining scene in Lakeland is the one that is still open and not crowded, and the full plate for the middle of the summer is the one that makes the week work.

The morning

Born & Bread is the bakery on Florida Avenue South, a James Beard Award semifinalist, and the line for the slow-fermented sourdough and the cruffins is the whole event. The country loaf is the one people make the trip for, dark crust, open crumb, the kind of bread you toast for a week. Order ahead the day before, show up early, and skip the line.

The coffee

Black & Brew has been the coffee benchmark for twenty years and it still is. Locally roasted Patriot Coffee, and the food side is where it gets interesting, because the avocado toast is genuinely good. Add the breakfast sandwiches, the salads, the soup, and a rotating cast of seasonal drinks, and it is the correct first stop for an August Saturday.

The dinner

Cob & Pen is a renovated 1927 Tudor house in the historic Dixieland neighborhood, craft beer, boutique wine, and fine food, and it does its late dinners. Nineteen61 is the reservation dinner, a Michelin Guide-listed Latin restaurant on East Main named for the year the chef's parents left Cuba. If the August week includes a dinner worth planning around, it is this one.

The local tip: the off-season dining scene is at its quietest in the middle of the summer, and the quiet dining scene is the one that does not require a reservation. Book Nineteen61 for the middle of the week and you will get the table you actually want.

If you are planning an August week and want a house that is a short walk from this list, send us the dates. We manage seven houses in the Lakeland area and we know which ones put you closest to the food.
