The Fourth of July in Lakeland is the version of the holiday that does not require a beach parking lot, and the plan is the one that makes the week work.

Why the week works

The coast is a parking lot by 4 p.m. on the Fourth, and the lake is a lake by 8 a.m. The houses we manage are the version of a Fourth of July that does not require a crowd, and the dock is the version of a fireworks display that does not require a boat ramp.

The plan

Day one is the arrival, a walk around the neighborhood, and a dinner at Cob & Pen. Day two is the lake, a boat morning, an early lunch, and an afternoon that does not have to be planned. Day three is the Fourth, a boat on the water, a dinner at Nineteen61, and a night on the dock. The fireworks are the thing you watch from the dock, and the dock is the thing that does not require a crowd.

The dinner

The Fourth of July dinner is the reservation dinner, and the one that is worth planning the week around is Nineteen61, the Michelin Guide-listed Latin restaurant on East Main. Book it for the Wednesday or the Thursday and you will get the table you actually want. Cob & Pen is the alternative, and the one that does its late dinners.

The local tip: the Fourth of July weeks fill early, because the people who plan around the dinner book the house first. Book the house before you book the dinner, and the dock house is the one to get.

Send us your dates. We manage seven houses in the Lakeland area and we will match you to the one that is the right size for a Fourth of July week and the right distance from the water.
